How to Tell If Your Creatine Gummies Actually Contain Creatine

You cannot test a gummy at home. Here are the five checks that actually matter, the four questions to send any brand, and the signals that mean less than you think.

There is no way to test a gummy at home. That is the frustrating truth, and any article that tells you otherwise — that you can taste it, dissolve it in water, or check for a gritty texture — is making it up.

What you can do is read a brand's evidence properly, and know which signals are meaningful and which are decoration. Given that independent testing has repeatedly found roughly half of creatine gummies failing their label claim, this is a skill worth having.

First: why this is even a question

Creatine monohydrate degrades into creatinine — an inert compound — in the presence of moisture, heat and acidic pH. A gummy contains all three by construction. This is not a conspiracy; it is chemistry, and it is why powders pass lab tests at 98–101% of label while gummies fail at roughly a 50% rate. The full testing record is here.

The practical consequence: a gummy can contain exactly what the label says on the day it is made and be well under claim by the time it reaches you. Testing at manufacture is not the same as potency in your jar.

The five checks, in order of usefulness

1. Is the COA batch-specific?

A certificate of analysis with no lot number is a marketing document.

Good: a COA you can look up by the batch code printed on your jar, matching the product you actually hold.
Weak: a single generic PDF linked from the footer, undated, no lot number, possibly years old.
Meaningless: the phrase "third-party tested" with nothing behind it.

Ask the brand directly for the COA matching your lot. A brand that tests every production run will send it. A brand that tested once in 2024 will not.

2. Does the COA report creatinine as well as creatine?

This is the single most informative question you can ask, and almost nobody in the category answers it.

Creatinine is the degradation fingerprint. When NOW Foods tested twelve creatine gummies, three of the six failures showed large amounts of creatinine present and the other three showed smaller amounts — meaning that in at least half the failures the creatine had been added and then broken down. Creatine alone tells you the number a brand wants you to see. Creatine and creatinine together tell you whether the product is holding up.

It cuts the other way too, which is why it is worth asking: in SuppCo's testing, the two products that passed label claim — Force Factor and Create — were both reported as carrying significant creatinine. Meeting claim today and degrading are not mutually exclusive. For reference, the powders in that same study held creatinine under 50 ppm.

Right now, a brand publishing creatinine figures is volunteering the number that could embarrass them. That willingness is itself a signal.

3. Is the testing near end of shelf life, or at manufacture?

Ask which. Most brands test at manufacture because it is cheaper and the numbers look better.

Stability data — potency at 6, 12, 18 months under controlled storage — is what actually tells you what is in the jar you bought. Very few brands publish it. If one does, that is a serious quality programme. How storage conditions affect this is covered here.

4. Which laboratory, and can they actually test gummies?

Name matters here, more than usual.

NOW's senior director of quality said publicly that NOW could not find a third-party lab able to reliably test creatine gummies, and that "the fastest growing dosage form has gotten ahead of itself." Extraction from a gelled, sugared matrix is genuinely difficult; a method built for powder can under-report on a compliant product.

Eurofins is the name that recurs among brands with credible programmes. NSF Certified for Sport is the strongest widely-available third-party mark — Create, Lemme and Force Factor hold it. A COA from a lab nobody can name, with no method stated, is worth very little.

Note the corollary, which cuts both ways: a brand holding certificates is not automatically clean. In one independent test, a product with lab certificates in hand had zero detectable creatine.

5. Does the dose maths make physical sense?

This one you can check yourself in ten seconds, and it catches the crudest problems.

A gummy weighs roughly 3–5 grams total, including gelling agent, sweetener, acid, colour and flavour. No gummy can contain 5g of creatine. Real per-gummy loading in this category runs about 1.0–1.7g, so a 5g serving is 3 to 5 gummies. Here is the arithmetic across ten brands.

If a label or product page claims 5g per gummy, something is wrong — either sloppy copywriting or a claim nobody checked. Either way it tells you how much attention the brand pays to its own label.

Then divide: count ÷ gummies-per-serving = actual days. A "30-day supply" of 120 gummies at 5 per serving is 24 days.

Signals that mean less than you think

  • "Made in an FDA-registered facility." Registration is not approval or inspection of the product. FDA does not approve dietary supplements at all.
  • "Clinically proven." The FTC has expressly flagged this phrase. Unless the brand holds trials on its own finished product, it is a substantiation problem, not a credential.
  • "Absorbs better than powder." A comparative superiority claim needing head-to-head human data. Rare that anyone has it.
  • Reviews and testimonials. The FTC's position is that these are "nothing more than a collection of anecdotal experiences" and cannot substantiate a health claim. Nobody can taste 5g of creatine.
  • Amazon bestseller rank. Several of the products that tested at zero creatine were Amazon bestsellers.

Things you might reasonably notice yourself

None of these are proof, but they are consistent with degradation:

  • Fused, slumped or sticky gummies — heat exposure, which accelerates conversion to creatinine.
  • Darkened colour or a caramel note — Maillard browning travels with creatine breakdown.
  • No weight change at all after 4+ weeks — most people gain 1–2kg of intracellular water on 5g/day. Its complete absence is weak evidence, not proof; some people genuinely don't.
  • A jar that has been in a hot car — assume potency loss.

The four questions to send a brand

Copy these into an email. The reply, and how fast it comes, tells you most of what you need:

  1. Can you send me the certificate of analysis for lot number [X] printed on my jar?
  2. Does that COA report creatinine as well as creatine?
  3. Was the sample tested at manufacture or near end of shelf life?
  4. Which laboratory ran it, and what extraction method did they use?

A brand with a real quality programme answers all four in one reply. A brand without one sends a generic PDF, or nothing.

What we think the standard should be

Batch-code-searchable COAs, showing creatine and creatinine both, from a named laboratory, with the method stated, tested near end of shelf life.

No brand in this category currently does all of that — us included. We would rather write that down publicly than claim a standard we have not yet met. Until a brand meets it, every buyer in this category is taking a label on trust, and the testing record says that trust is misplaced about half the time.
